Ontologies for Knowledge Graphs?
نویسنده
چکیده
Modern knowledge representation (KR), and description logics (DL) in particular, promises many advantages for information management, based on an unambiguous, implementation-independent semantics for which a range of reasoning services is available. These strengths align well with the needs of an ever growing information industry. Today, giants like Google, Facebook, and Wikimedia consciously deploy ontological models, and store information in graph-like data structures that are more similar to DL ABoxes than to traditional relational databases. Many smaller organisations follow, and “knowledge graphs” appear in numerous places. Clearly, logic-based KR can make significant contributions to this development, yet there is often very little adoption in typical knowledge graph applications. Focusing on Wikidata as a particular use case, this invited contribution asks which technical issues might limit the impact of symbolic KR in this area, and summarises some recent developments towards addressing them in various logics.

Visualizing the Evolution of Ontologies: A Dynamic Graph Perspective
Ontologies can be represented as graphs, since they essentially comprise a set of interconnected concepts describing a certain field of knowledge. Consequently, ontologies are often visualized as graphs, using different visual notations and common graph drawing techniques. The visualization of static graphs has been researched a lot, but when it comes to time-varying graphs, researchers face mu...
متن کاملKNAML: A Knowledge Representation Language for Distributed Reasoning
The Knowledge Agent Mediation Language (KNAML) is designed for use in multi-agent reasoning systems. Like conceptual graphs, KNAML represents knowledge using concepts, relations, and graphs. Concepts and relations are linked to form graphs, and graphs may be nested within other graphs. Additional constructs are used to support distributed reasoning and ontological concision. KNAML treats ontolo...
متن کاملAnalyzing the Structure of Biomedical Ontologies Using Oracle
Ontologies are large and complex knowledge representation systems. Ontologies are organized as graphs, where each node represents entity (called a concept). Concepts are connected together by different kinds of relationships, such as IS-A (e.g., the heart IS-A organ). Ontologies have many applications in the biomedical domain. Biomedical ontologies are used for data integration, data annotation...
متن کاملOntologies for Knowledge Graphs: Breaking the Rules
Large-scale knowledge graphs (KGs) are widely used in industry and academia, and provide excellent use-cases for ontologies. We find, however, that popular ontology languages, such as OWL and Datalog, cannot express even the most basic relationships on the normalised data format of KGs. Existential rules are more powerful, but may make reasoning undecidable. Normalising them to suit KGs often a...
متن کاملIntegrating Domain Ontologies into Knowledge-Based Systems
The work presented in this paper deals with the integration of heavyweight ontologies into Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS). We claim that such ontologies have to be built at the conceptual level, and that their use in a KBS requires an operationalization step, that consists in transcribing the ontology in an operational knowledge representation language according to a given scenario of use. For t...
متن کاملProvability-Based Semantic Interoperability Via Translation Graphs
Provability-based semantic interoperability (PBSI) is a kind of interoperability that transcends mere syntactic translation to allow for robust, meaningful information exchange across systems employing ontologies for which mappings or matchings may not exist, and which can be evaluated by provability-based (PB) queries. We introduce a system of translation graphs to formalize the relationships ...
